Welcome to The Positive Leadership Blog sponsored by Mel Hawkins & Associates.  This is an open forum in which the principles of Positive Leadership are discussed and where the reader can ask for ideas about how to respond to a wide range of leadership challenges. 

Leadership is an art as well as a science and one develops one's own competency through diligent study, hard work, and practice.  While effective leadership must be centered on positive principles, each of us develops a unique style and personality as a leader through the daily practice of our craft.  The more we try, the more we learn and the more we learn, the more we can accomplish.

I began my first job as a supervisor in 1972.  As a result of some challenges very early in my leadership career, I became a student of leadership and I continue to learn every day.  In my management consulting practice, the service that brings me the most satisfaction is helping men and women learn and grow in their role as a leader. 

You are invited to participate actively in this forum.  Periodically, I will post a note or article on the subject of Positive Leadership and as the blog matures we may try to expand our objective in terms of the type, breadth, and scope of the material to be offered.

By participating in this Forum you will:

    Mel Hawkins, BA, MS, MPA, began serving small business, professional practices, and not-for-profit agencies in 1988. Mel is an organizational management and leadership specialist and is also Certified as a Senior Professional of Human Resources by the Society of Human Resource Management. A former Chief Operating Officer of a distribution and inventory management company, Mel Hawkins has also served as manager of a multi-specialty group medical practice, Court Executive of a unified trial court, principal of a management consulting practice, and a small business owner, giving Mel more than thirty years of leadership experience in both the public and private sectors. This broad experience has given Mel a unique perspective, one that has served him well as and innovator and problem-solver. Educated at Manchester College where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Mel has also earned a Master of Science in Education, majoring in Psychology, from the University of Saint Francis, and a Master of Public Affairs from Indiana University. Mel is also a Vietnam Era Veteran. Mel resides with his wife in Fort Wayne, Indiana, their three children now grown. Active in his community, Mel attended Leadership Fort Wayne; has served as President of the Board of Managers of Byron Health Center; was a co-founder and board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Wayne; was co-founder and former President of the South Side Business Group of Fort Wayne and Allen County. Mel also served on the board of the Martin Luther King Montessori School, the Alumni Board of Leadership Fort Wayne, and as a co-chair of the Legislative Committee of the Indiana Correctional Association. In 1995, Mel accepted an offer to join the leadership team of one of his client companies and subsequently became the Chief Operating Officer. After taking time off to write two books in 2000, Mel returned to his consulting practice in 2003. Through his work as a co-founder and former president of the South Side Business Group, Mel has been a small business advocate. Small businesses, which include most professional practices and not-for-profit agencies, face many of the challenges of larger business organizations but typically lack the internal resources necessary to deal with them. In addition, small business organizations rarely enjoy the luxury of deep pockets and those dollars that are spent on the services of professional advisors inevitably come directly from the pocket of the owner(s). Small business owners often find themselves isolated and have few people they can confide in who understand the small business environment. Through his many years of experience Mel Hawkins has gained a unique appreciation for the needs of the small business organization and he has worked hard to find creative and affordable solutions that produce a return on one’s investment.
